“…because I find that line of thinking foolish in the extreme!”

“Do you deny their inherent difference?”

My head hurt.

“No, but I also refuse to accept that a difference implies any superiority. Or inferiority for that matter. There can be equality.”

“And that is where I disagree. There is no equality! That is a fallacy when looking at those infernal little beings. And, well, any others, really.”

My eyes wanted to stay shut. Also I wanted those two to shut up.

“You place them at the bottom?”

“I do, Algernon. They are hardly better than simple beasts, and if it were not for the rather onerous amounts of work required here, I would simply see to it they were sent out to be game instead of—”

“They would make horrible game. They are far too powerful for most of the hunters.”

“Are we to coddle them?”

I tried to get my eyes open. It was a strange battle to fight, because I didn’t understand why they were so intent on staying closed.

“I daresay that was part of the assignment, Bertrand.”

“Odd how I do not recall that for one moment. Where did she say that?”

“Believe it would be when did she say that.”

“Where is perfectly acceptable there.”

“No, it is not.”

“Yes it is.”

“No—”

“Yes. It is. I can ask you to cite where she was when she made that request. How is that any stranger than asking when the request was made?”

“Mainly because it is out of norm for such a thing. And she has made many of her requests at the same locale, meaning it would be less useful for pointing out a particular request, right?”

“Perhaps, but that matters little in your attempt to say I was incorrect in my phrasing.”

I tried to move my hands, but they were bound behind my back.

“You have a good point, Bertrand.”

“As do you, Algernon. I doubt it would do me any good should I learn where she made such an ask of us.”

“Would that we had such a succulent moment of agreeableness in writing, so we might remember it fondly.”

“Too true.”

I was trussed up in some fashion, in a way I didn’t understand. I couldn’t really feel ropes or straps or anything, and I didn’t think there was a blindfold or mask over my face, but I couldn’t see anything, and I couldn’t move.

The inside of me was more free. I started to push my mana around, burn it through my channels, and then compress it. I’d forgotten many of the Fayden’s instructions, and I realized this was something I should have been doing the whole time I’d been traveling.

“Still, the quoddies would be horrible game,” Algernon. “They have immense power, are a tiny target, and—”

“Ah,” Bertrand interrupted, “but then we would not have to deal with them, would we?”

“Who do you imagine would be required to stock the game in this fanciful scenario of yours?”

“Oh.”

“Oh indeed. You would be forced to deal with them on the regular. And I would expect a marked increase in the number of bites you would suffer as a result.
